Inside Edition reported on the authenticity of Subway’s tuna sandwiches following a class-action lawsuit filed against the sandwich chain earlier this year falsely claiming that there was no tuna in their tuna sandwiches.

Our team at Applied Food Technologies (AFT) conducted more than 50 tests on 150 pounds of tuna collected by Inside Edition from three Subway locations. Results revealed that all samples contained skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna, or both.

In an interview with SeafoodSource, AFT President LeeAnn Applewhite explained the challenges of analyzing fragmented DNA from processed tuna, and why the methods other labs used for their reports cannot accurately detect canned tuna.

In its investigative news story, Inside Edition reported on foods falsely advertised as scallops on menus and in markets in NYC, Dallas, and other U.S. cities.

Scientists at IEH Applied Food Technologies (AFT) tested the scallops collected by Inside Edition and found that several locations were selling imitation products, made from cheaper, less healthy fish pastes and spinefoot fish.

Do homemade baby foods have lower heavy metal content than store-bought brands?

To answer this question, Healthy Babies Bright Futures conducted a research study. As part of this study, our colleagues at Brooks Applied Labs, LLC tested 288 baby food samples for arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury.

The organization concluded that homemade and store-bought baby foods have similar levels of heavy metals, with 94% of all foods tested containing detectable amounts of heavy metals.

The results also indicate that heavy metal levels varied widely by food type rather than by who prepared the food. The top ten heavily contaminated foods included rice products, teething crackers, raisins, granola bars with raisins, and oat-ring cereals.

Dr. Mohammad Koohmaraie, President of the Meat Division at IEH, is a featured speaker at the 2022 American Meat Science Association (AMSA) Reciprocal Meat Conference. He will share his expertise at the “New Approaches to Reducing Salmonellosis Across the Food Industry” symposium and will moderate and present at the “Strengthening the Position of Meat Science as a Scientific Discipline” session.

IEH Laboratories tested samples collected by Inside Edition from three popular pool clubs in Las Vegas. According to the results, water samples from two pools revealed the presence of E. coli and a bacteria count of 100 million and 15 million, while the third pool water sample was clean with no evidence of fecal contamination.
